Typed copy of a letter (18 leaves), with introduction and footnotes by Farquhar, apparently prepared by him for publication. Farquhar states in the introduction that the letter was found among Brewer's series of letters sent to friends in the East, written by him as a daily record of his personal observations during the four years of his work with the California State Geological Survey, commonly known as the Whitney Survey, which was organized in 1860. The letter's recipient, George Jarvis Brush, was a professor of metallurgy at Yale University. Includes handwritten draft copy of introduction, with bibliography.

Brewer went to Yale in 1848 to study soil analysis with J.P. Norton. He left to teach for two years, retuned and got his Ph. D. from the Sheffield Scientific School in 1852. After Yale he went to study in Heidelberg, Munich and Paris. In 1858 he was made professor of chemistry and geology at Washington College in Pennsylvania.
